My Little House

Welcome to Little House in the Pines!

I'm Jana, and this is my cozy retreat where I write about moments as a stay-at-home-first-time-mama. Most of the time, the most therapeutic minutes of my day are when I sit at my little upstairs desk and jot down the happenings of our life. These quiet moments come mainly during my babe's nap time and in between my duties as our "household manager." This is where I process the thoughts, emotions, and events that make up the kaleidoscope of our family's world.

My husband Michael and I live in the piney hills {which is a perfect description because our back yard alone boasts nine pine trees; yes, nine} of the deep south, where the winters are mild, the summers are scorching, and the barometer always reads 100% humidity. We like it here. Well, except for the fact that my hair falls flat and his shirt sticks to his skin the moment we open the door. Also, I really only get to wear a scarf and boots about three months out of the year. As a girl who always dreamed of sipping hot chocolate in flannel by a roaring fire while it snows outside, this is a bad thing. Because we don't get snow. Ever. And, I mean, who doesn't like wearing boots and a cute scarf? But all in all, it's a pretty good place to live.

Our little girl, Maylin, was born in late March of 2013. She is the light and joy of our little home. People told us our lives would be forever changed when she was born, but there was no preparing us for the force of love and tenderness that we feel for her.

In fact, we were so enamored by this whole "force of love and tenderness" thing that we decided to have another child pretty much right away. I'm not sure yet how crazy this idea will prove to be. Only time will tell, and I'm sure I'll blog all about it. Our second daughter {sisters, yay!} will be born in early June 2014, making our two girls roughly 14 months apart.

I've blogged sporadically since college, but with the recent resignation of my teaching position to stay home with our daughter{s} I've found myself wanting needing to write with more regularity and with more purpose. Believe it or not, changing another diaper and speaking in a high, squeaky baby voice all day can become a bit monotonous. Not that I don't love speaking in baby coos to my daughter, after all, I chose to stay home with her, but it's a little embarrassing when my husband comes home and I speak to him that way too...

So, welcome to our little neck of the neighborhood! Please feel free to chat with me in the comments section. This online community is pretty special to me too. Expect to find  stories about our daily happenings, plenty of pictures of Maylin {sorry, not sorry in advance}, and a lot of thoughts about adapting to mom life.

  1. I found your blog via the lovely Aubrey Kinch! I'm confused as how your little one's name is pronounced! If it's not pronounced as May-Lynne then how is the "lin" part said? May Lean like you are leaning? Sorry, the teacher in me is dying to know, as you probably remember from your teaching days pronouncing things right is important! :) But then you then said the Steel Magnolias bit and M'Lynn is pronounced like "Muh" then lynn.

    1. Isn't Aubrey a miracle worker!! Sorry if I was confusing about pronouncing Maylin's name. It is pronounced May-Lynne, except we put the emphasis on the first syllable of her name instead of the second syllable. So her name sounds like MAYlin rather than mayLIN. It's a subtle difference, really, but very important to us! Glad you found my little blog!
